Driven by Purpose, Powered by Innovation
At the Impact Incubator, we are dedicated to nurturing student success by cultivating essential skills in innovation and collaboration.
Our mission is to empower students through meaningful connections, creative problem-solving, and teamwork.
The Challenge
In today’s world, many students face a growing gap in critical skills such as collaboration, authentic connection, and engagement. Factors like their K-12 educational experiences, the influence of technology, remote or hybrid work and learning, and the rise of social media have contributed to this disconnect. Research, employer insights, and candid conversations with students themselves consistently reveal a pressing need for these foundational competencies—skills that are vital for personal growth and professional success.
Our Solution
We’ve designed a dynamic, research-backed approach to bridge this gap. Through carefully curated activities in “third spaces”—utilizing the arts, culinary, nature and more—student teams engage in experiences that sharpen their collaboration and performance skills. We’re committed to equity and inclusion, breaking down barriers by providing funding, clear guidance, and a supportive environment that encourages participation.
Students join these activities as part of a class or organization dedicated to building teamwork and delivering meaningful outcomes. Every experience is grounded in behavioral science research, ensuring students achieve significant growth and long-term benefits. We transform the world into their classroom, stepping in where traditional formal and informal settings may not fully meet their needs.
How It Works
At Penn State, we introduce first-year students to a culture of collaboration through carefully designed out-of-classroom experiences. In select classes, students are organized into small peer groups, provided with resources to ensure financial access and educational equity, and tasked with selecting an activity via the For The Future App. Upon arriving at a partner venue on campus or in town —focused on arts, nature, or culinary experiences—they participate in evidence-based, guided discussions developed by Penn State students and behavioral scientists. These activities foster essential skills such as rapport, trust, empathy, and deep observation, with a structure that encourages participation by offering social support and motivation. Sponsors, whether individuals or organizations, can customize and brand these experiences to align with their unique vision and goals.
During and after participating in third-space activities, students upload artifacts such as photos, videos, or reflections to the For The Future App, where data is securely stored and used to build a personalized, private profile. This profile enhances students’ self-awareness, while integrated tools and assessments promote individual growth and team development. With student consent, content can be efficiently shared with sponsors. Advanced analytics, including natural language processing, generate valuable insights for students, Penn State, and sponsors, fostering a deeper understanding of personal and collective progress.

Why and How to get Involved
Universities are under increasing scrutiny as stakeholders question the value of a traditional degree and its effectiveness in preparing students for the modern workforce. Employers, in turn, face challenges in integrating and empowering recent graduates, often lacking the resources or strategies to facilitate a smooth transition into professional environments. This disconnect between academic preparation and real-world readiness not only impacts individual career trajectories but also carries broader societal consequences, exacerbating the gap between education and employability in an evolving global landscape.
The Impact Incubator at Penn State seeks to enhance the value of a college degree by cultivating critical skills often underrepresented in traditional higher education. We invite visionary individuals, industry partners, and foundations to join us as pioneers in transforming the educational experience for today’s students. By reimagining the college journey, we aim to sharpen essential skills, elevate expectations, and establish Penn State as "Collaboration U." Our initiative begins with first-year students, providing sustained, strategic support throughout their academic journey to enhance career readiness and foster lifelong success. Through this innovative approach, we strive to amplify the impact of a college degree, equipping graduates to thrive in the modern workforce and beyond.
To solidify Penn State’s identity as "Collaboration U," we will implement a strategic campaign to highlight student success across media, social media, and through partnerships with industry leaders. This targeted effort will showcase the transformative impact of our collaborative initiatives, attracting a greater proportion of students who prioritize these essential skills. By elevating the visibility of our programs, we aim to enhance the overall student experience, foster greater engagement, and drive improved career outcomes, further strengthening Penn State’s reputation as a leader in preparing graduates for lifelong success.
